Speech Therapy

This is round 2 for our family:  taking a Ray-Ray (Rai-Rai) to speech therapy at the local elementary school.  And it's round 2 of having a girl who LOVES to go!

Jinna gets so excited each week to go see the therapist, counting down the days each time.  On one of the first times she met her, "Dr. Jo" said something about Jinna "cracking her up."  Jinna thought this was the funniest thing ever, so each week thereafter she would run into the room saying, "You crack me up!"

To no one's surprise, J-Rai has been learning very quickly and mastering new speech sounds every week.  We are thankful!

We were blessed with great weather, so we did a LOT outside, including....
  • Epic scavenger hunt
  • Family morning workouts
  • Team games
  • Color wars
  • Swimming
  • Hot-tubbing
  • Kayaking
  • Paddleboarding
  • Blessings and luminaries (with bonus fireworks!)

It was about as close to perfect as possible!

Lake house: Indoor activities

Some of the fun things...

  • Giant breakfasts, lunches and dinners
  • Team Treasure Hunt
  • Family Devos in boat house
  • Jeopardy! game
  • Skit about Mom and Dad's life
  • Decorating cupcakes
  • Learning about emojis and slang from the teens late at night

Camp AnniversaWray!

Unlike most people celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary, Mom and Dad chose to invite all 30 of their progeny to a big house on a lake for 4 days!

We returned to the house on Lake Gaston that we had stayed at one Christmas season a few years ago -- but this time it was even more fun because we could actually enjoy the lake activities!  (Last time a few of us did go for a polar plunge... but that wasn't exactly enjoyable)

The weekend was full of all kinds of fun Mom had planned out ahead of time -- we had a suggested schedule of activities for each day and intentional "togetherness"time.  It was a GREAT vacation!!!

Miles' future restaurant

It seems like pretty much weekly Colsen has some new idea for a restaurant... It's usually something like, "I'm going to have a bakery called  Cruffins and it's just going to make croissant-muffins."

Well this week Miles announced he had an idea.  His is going to be called, "Frankly's" and the slogan is going to be "Homemade, Shmo-made:  Just live in the moment."

Sounds suuuuuper healthy.

At least he knows the difference

Miles just asked me if we could go to the library because he "has his good book to read (Prince Warriors series), but needs some twaddle, too."

More Colsen quotes

He's told me these are his themes for 2019:

"Since Jesus is the reason we live, let's make Jesus the reason we live."

"The only people who go to Heaven are the people who know they can't get to Heaven."

Gateway Ceremony

The culmination of Colsen's Gateway year was the Blessing Ceremony last night.
About 50 people attended the dinner and ceremony in the Arborbrook gym.  The few hours leading up to it were a little hectic.... I had bought all of the ingredients to make 24 servings of baked ziti earlier in the week, but when we woke up yesterday morning we discovered someone had left the fridge door open overnight and we had to throw all of the food away.  Pete quickly ran to the store to buy all new ingredients before heading to Wingate for their graduation ceremony.

We changed locations the day before due to pending thunderstorms, so we were quickly setting up tables and organizing the room that afternoon. The Eisman family helped us figure out the configurations and place settings, Mom and Dad arrived bearing cake, flowers, and bread, and Strider and Sidney were on hand to help make lemonade, light candles, etc.

Then we rushed home to get changed and get the food.... only to be trapped by severe storms and flooded roads!  Pete was stuck at Chick Fil-A and the rest of us were stuck at home.... and then our power went out.

Anyway, we all made it to the gym eventually and it turned out to be a lovely evening.  Hunter gave a charge to the boys about becoming faithful men, being honest, and doing the small things well.  He concluded the talk by giving them their very first Man Card.  :)

After dinner the dads all gave their blessings to the sons.  It is a powerful thing to hear such words from a father's mouth, and some tears were shed, making the boys feel even more uncomfortable than they were already feeling.  Haha!

At the end all of the men in the room stood in formation with candles and the boys passed through the "gauntlet" to the other side where Pete presented them with certificates.

We pray that they will look back on this rite-of-passage as a time that is meaningful and formative in their walks with God and in their journey to manhood.

Colsen's Gateway Year

Colsen's had a big year.... turning 12 and his big yo-yo trip, Cotillion, and Gateway!  All year 7 boys and their dads have been meeting to work through the Gateway book, focusing on spiritual traits of manhood and also some physical skills.  Various men have provided teaching and training and the boys have learned a lot!

We're so thankful for the opportunity to raise our kids in community with other people and are grateful for the relationships Colsen has been able to develop with both boys and men this year.  We pray God will use this training for His glory and Colsen's good!

When Comfort Isn't Comfortable

One of the things that’s so great about living in the light of God’s truths is that ordinary words can take on greater depth and meaning that the rest of the world may never know.  The word “comfort” is one such word.

Our culture’s definition of comfort is a state of physical ease, a lack of pain or constraint. In other words, to feel comfortable is to feel good and unhindered.

But is this how our Lord uses the word comfort in the Bible?  After a formal greeting, Paul starts the letter we know as Second Corinthians with this passage:

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ's sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer. Our hope for you is unshaken, for we know that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in our comfort.
A closer look at the word comfort, repeated five times in that short passage reveals something much richer than making a person feel good.  The Greek word paraklÄ“sis, translated as comfort, literally means “calling to one’s side.”  This coming alongside another can mean encouragement or consolation, but it can also mean exhortation.

When coming alongside a person who needs comfort, we may be called to encourage them – literally, to strengthen one’s heart – by just being present and offering simple consolation, OR we may be called to come alongside in order to help turn them in a new direction, if they are going the wrong way.  This could be very uncomfortable by the world’s definition, since it does provide constraint when the world wants no constraint.

At the root of Biblical comfort is the concept of needing a Savior.  In fact, in Luke 2:25, this same Greek word is used when it talks about the “consolation of Israel” – a phrase often used to refer to the waiting for the Messiah.  True comfort, or consolation, only comes when we are rescued from our sin by our Savior.  But, of course, in order to be saved, one needs to acknowledge that he is in need of a savior… which is uncomfortable to say the least.

When considering how we are to comfort others, we can look to the best example, the ParaklÄ“tos Himself, the Holy Spirit, our Helper or Comforter.  He is not just a sweet, mystic cosmic hand patting us gently, saying, “There, there, it will all be alright.”  His job, according to Jesus, is to teach us all things and to remind us of what Jesus said.  And Jesus said all kinds of uncomfortable things that we sometimes do not want to be reminded of!  And yet, that is what the Comforter does…. because He knows the way to true comfort.

In our house we used to have a big banner up along the width of the living room wall that said in giant letters, “It’s OK to be uncomfortable!”  I intended it to be a reminder that our immediate satisfaction does not have to be out constant goal… It’s ok to be a little hungry without completely freaking out, etc.

But, in light of this week’s sermon, maybe there is another level to this truth.  Sometimes our uncomfortableness can actually be leading us to a deeper comfort, and maybe the Comforter is at work in our lives.  Now that’s good news!

Jinna turns Double Digits!

The countdown was long but the big day finally arrived and J-Rai turned 10!!!!

To celebrate this big milestone, we went to play mini golf with the Clarks (we got to see them a lot this week!).  It was funny watching Aunt Katie try to carry on conversation with me, make sure Lillian didn't wander off or fall into the water, and listen to 7 different kids yelling out "I got 3 on 14!" or "Aunt Katie, I got a 4!"  She valiantly kept 2 different scorecards going and everyone had a great time.

Then the whole family was able to assemble for dinner together -- all of Jinna's favorites.  She requested a chocolate-frosted cake WITH SPRINKLES -- very important.

I think she loved her big day!
