Small town connections

Before we moved to town, our former professor here connected us with his son, who also became our realtor.

That realtor helped us buy a house from one of the professors Pete will be working with, and his wife is also our CC director.

Their realtor is also the lead singer of a band some of us went to see in concert last weekend.  At the concert the woman selling the CD's and t-shirts is also Pete's assistant at work.

The house is currently being renovated by a man who is also the worship leader at the church we've been going to.

That man was taught in high school by Brian, who is also Pete's good friend.

Speaking of teachers, Miles' new teacher at CC is one of Katie's best friends from college.

I could keep going on and on.....

This town feels like a big (small?) bowl of spaghetti, and if you pull one piece you'll find it's connected to all the others in a bunch of fun ways.

I feel like the sign welcoming people to town should read:

"Welcome to Grove City, where every person will hold at least 2 positions in your life."

January Mailbox

Before I moved away my book club in NC gave me the most thoughtful and creative gift -- this sweet mailbox filled with 30 cards so I would have “mail” to open each day of this first month in my new town.  It has been such an encouragement to feel their love and read their wisdom every day. It feels like I get to have mini conversations with them all the time.

I'm thankful for how they've made the transition to a new place easier!

Restaurant Experience #4

Each of our kids received a "coupon" for Christmas from us that entitles them to a one-on-one shopping trip with Mom at the Outlet Mall here, and because I'm so nice, I've been throwing in dinner as well.

When Colsen and I went out we ate at the food court -- big mistake.

So when it was Milo's turn we went to Blackout Burger Bar, and that was awesome.  We got to completely customize our burger -- and it was more than enough for both of us to split and still not eat everything.

Definitely going to make this a regular destination!

Restaurant Experience #3

Well, they can't all be great.

Our family has been a-buzz about an announcement that a new restaurant was coming to town.  The owner of the old-fashioned movie theater bought the space across the street and has been transforming it into a 1920's style grille, whose menu looks awesome.

Some friends were coming to town and when we heard that the restaurant's "soft opening" was to be that night, we thought it would be a fun experience to take our friends there.  How often do you get to go to a restaurant on its very first night of operation??

Well, it turns out you probably shouldn't.

We were warned when we arrived that because it was their first day we should expect that our wait times would be longer than usual since they were working out the kinks and training their staff, but in exchange for our patience we would receive a $5 off coupon to come back again at a later date.

Since our friends had a couple of hours before they had to leave town, we thought an extra wait would be just fine.

The wait -- after we had ordered our food, mind you -- ended up being over TWO AND A HALF HOURS!!

After about 10 minutes of waiting we took this happy picture.

After about an hour of waiting we asked the server about the status and she said she had no idea.  We resorted to taking pictures of the items on the table.  At least they were offering free wine.

After 90 minutes of waiting she said she thought they were "still trying to find the food" to cook.

After 2 hours of waiting smoke was billowing out of the kitchen.

After 2 hours and 15 minutes we begged our server to just bring our friends whatever she could so they could get on the road.

After 2 hours and 30 minutes some of the rest of us got some of our dishes, but not all.

After we left Pete was in such a bad mood that I think it's going to be hard to get him to go back, even with a $5 off coupon.

But I still like it and I can't wait to go back.  :)   It shouldn't take them too long to find the food in the future.... right??

Restaurant Experience #2

One of the very best things about moving back to our college town is the fact that a couple of our college friends are here!

When we made plans to go out for our first dinner together, it was a no-brainer to go back to one of our favorite places from the college years... Rachel's Roadhouse.

I know they say you can't go back in time, but it sure felt like it that night.  The restaurant does not appear to have changed AT ALL.... I even ordered the same salad I remember ordering 25 years ago.

Pete and I got there a little early and as we were sitting and waiting for our table a man came up and told us he had graduated with us from GCC!  When he told us his name we remembered him and we ended up going over to join his family at their table.  His wife also graduated with us, so we had fun talking about all our mutual friends.

Then Brian and Jodi arrived and I think we laughed almost constantly for the rest of the night.  I know we all look a little different, but we sure feel like we did back in the day.

Collectively, I'd say Brian and Pete have the same amount of hair that they did in college... it's just relocated somewhat.  :)

I ended up accidentally leaving my sweater there so since I had to go back and get it the next day, I took the opportunity to take the boys with me so they could try Rachel's famous pretzels and hot fudge.  They declared that to be the very BEST food they have EVER eaten.

Then Colsen left his coat there, so we had to go back the next day, too.

Just kidding -- he remembered it before we'd left the parking lot.  Darn.
