St. Nicholas Day!

(For background on why we celebrate this holiday, see here)

This year's St. Nicholas Day Eve coincided with our neighborhood's Tree Lighting Ceremony.  We thought this was perfect, since Santa Claus always makes an appearance there, and this is the time for our kids to do all the Santa/St. Nick stuff.

Strider had a few friends over, and we all bundled up to go to the festivities.

There was a full carol-singing and Scripture-reading ceremony at the gazebo, which was pretty cool.

But... the wind was mighty cold, so we didn't last long!
But... we kept hanging around because we were waiting for the horse-drawn carriage rides that they've always had in the past -- and we wanted to see Santa.

But... it turned out there were neither carriage rides nor Santa this year!  Major bummer.

But... as we were driving around the neighborhood looking at lights afterwards, we decided to stop by the house that times their lights to music, and look who happened to be there!

I was so happy Colsen and Rayna didn't have to be disappointed this year.  (And I was certainly NOT about to take them to a mall to find him!)

So, after seeing good ol' Santa Claus, we came home and told the story of the real St. Nick that lived long ago.  Then, the kids set out their stocking to see if they might find some special gifts in them the next morning...

It looks like they might....

Yep!  Very happy kids this morning!

Now we're gearing up for more special things tonight...  A bunch of our friends are coming over for a special project...

 We love St. Nicholas Day!

  1. St. Nicholas Day is something I have only learned about in recent years. We read the story of the real St. Nick to our children each Christmas, but I think it would confuse them to start celebrating this now. I guess we'll stick to stockings on Christmas. I think this is a very cool celebration!
